Screw it, Let’s do it: lessons in life and business

Just read Screw it, Let’s do it by Richard Branson the book is an excellent read which I highly recommend.  In the book he talks about a number of essential philosophies that have led to his success that I believe are so integral to success in all aspects of life. These philosophies are often over looked, ignored and missing from most people but they are the foundation for success and above all happiness!

Richard Branson is an absolutely inspiring and incredible person and I believe there is a lot to learn from his approach to life and business.  He is truly someone that squeezes the most out of life and lives to the fullest and there is so much that can be learnt from his philosophies.

The following are a few of the philosophies that he highlights in his book.  I think these philosophies are a blueprint to a successful and fulfilling life!

 

JUST DO IT!  Just do it, believe in your self

How many of you had a passion or a dream but did not have the courage to JUST DO IT?!  This is the crux of the problem! You will never know if you don’t take a shot, as Wayne Gretzkey says “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”  AND don’t take NO for an answer!  Believe in your self and you abilities, if you want to do something you should just do it, but also prepare well, have faith in yourself and never give up!

“If something is what you really want to do, just do it.  Whatever your goal is you will never succeed unless you let go of your fears and fly.”

HAVE FUN!

Having fun may seem contrary to the popular believe that: finding a good job, working your ass off and with some luck you may be rich by the time your 65. Having Fun is vital to success, when you are doing something you love and working hard money will come!  The key is that when you are having fun it does not seem like work, your motivated to continue to strive for more challenges and greater success because you love what you are doing!  Isn’t this the dream?  To do something you love and have fun doing? That’s why all boys growing up want to be athletes and rock stars!  Why give up on that dream, what is it that you love to do and JUST DO IT!

BE BOLD

Fortune favours the bold!  This is the famous saying and it is very true, but it is very important to recognize bold and insane!  Life is all about taking risks but its important to take calculated risks.  Being Bold is critical to achieving your dreams, nothing ventured nothing gained.  Nothing great was achieved by playing it safe.  “Believe in yourself, you can do it, be bold but don’t gamble.”

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

“Everyone needs something to aim for.  You can call it a challenge, or you can call it a goal.  It is what makes us human.  It is was challenges that took us from being cavemen to reaching for the stars.”

It is critical to challenge your self, you will grow; your life will change, your outlook will be positive!

Life is all about attitude and your perspective, its not always easy to reach your goals but that’s no reason to stop.  Instead, say to your self, ‘I can do it. I’ll keep on trying until I win.’

We all have heard the saying do something that scares you every day, what this is saying is to challenge your self.  This is so fundamental to success, without challenges we would become stagnant, rusty, dull.  Challenges keep us sharp, motivated and allow us to grow to become better than we were last year, last month, last week, last second! Start to welcome the challenges in your life for they are opportunities!

STAND ON YOUR OWN FEET

“If you want milk, don’t sit on a stool in the middle of a field in the hope that the cow will back up to you.”

This quote highlights a key point, if you want something, you have to go out and do it!  Don’t wait around in the hopes that someone will hand it to you on a silver platter.  Be your own man and make it happen! Stand on your own feet, have belief in your self and make it happen!  Its important to be self-sufficient,  rely on your self but work together with others!

LIVE IN THE MOMENT

“Love life and live it to the full, enjoy every moment, make every second count, don’t have regets.”

Many times people get caught up in the daily rush of life, before you know it everything has past them by.  Many people also are always focusing on the future and never seem content.  Live in the moment, life is a gift and live it to the full, we have one life so make the most of it!  Don’t get caught up in past and future, its important to look ahead but always live in the moment!  Regrets are useless, don’t waste time and energy worrying about something you cant change in the past when you can start making changes now in the present that will cause positive changes for your future!  Regrets weigh you down and hold you back in the past when you should move on. One thing that helps you capture the moment is to live with no regrets.

VALUE FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Family and friends come first! This is often forgotten about, when people work long hours at the expense of their family and friends, they burn bridges and ruin relationships for money or a raise or other objects.  There is nothing else as important as family and friends, they are always there for you good or bad, they have your back when times are tough, they genuinely care for you!  Don’t squander these relationships, because you will eventually learn that nothing is as important as close family and friends.  You cant put a price on these relationships so do your best to appreciate them!  “We all need a strong support network.  Even though I was taught to stand on my own feet, without my loyal family and friends I would be lost.” RB

Like Don Corleone said, “a man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man.”

HAVE RESPECT

“Be polite and respectful , do the right thing, keep your good name, be fair in all your dealings.”

In life it is so important to treat everyone with respect and the courtesy that you would wish to receive.  Always keep your word, your name is everything in life, and as it goes you can spend years building up your good name and only second to tarnish it.  Your reputation is everything

“If your starting in business and ask me if I have a lesson for you, id say, ‘be fair in all your dealings.  Don’t cheat – but aim to win.’ This rule should extend to your personal life.  My motto is, ‘never do anything if you cant sleep at night.’  It’s a good rule to follow.” RB

These are a few of the principals that Richard Branson talk about in Screw it Lets do it.  They are very simple but make a world of difference when you implement them in your life!

Above all, Believe in your dreams and have the courage to make them happen, if you do this you will succeed!
